"What do I even start off saying for my last FnF post?" That is what I finally thought of after about 5 minutes staring blankly at my computer screen so I decided that's what I should run with. I don't like drawing out goodbyes so I'm going to keep it short. I've had so much fun, met so many amazing people, had a lifetime of the sickest memories while running this blog and its been a great pleasure to have shared them with you guys! But as you've read this will be the last post ever on FnF, and this may leave you thinking, what the fuck is there too look at now? Well that's the sick part!

I am going to be teaming up with my homie Luke Connor to bring you a brand new skate blog called "You Got That"! We are more hyped than ever to start postin like mad men to bring you fresh photos and videos like whoa.

Sunday night we will post the link to the new temporary blog, and the first post will drop on Monday where you will be given the 411 all about the new site! Tofino Comp Count Down

Tofino comp is my favorite comp of the year hands down, and I might go as far as saying the best comp the Island has to offer. I'll be watching the clock all day at work and counting down the minutes till I'm on my way to actual West Coast. Hopefully I'll see everyone out there and if your thinking about hitting up the Hippy Commune I'd highly suggest otherwise, those Hippy's are fucked and if you see me out and about and want to know why I have a good story for you. Summer's In Effect!

I knew Summer was in full swing finally when I walked outside yesterday morning! I felt that Summer morning feeling I had been missing for the last year and was ready to get shit cracken. The weekend started off with a bang with Cheyenne getting a sick line at the Esq. High 10 rail. Chey's line was all stomped with authority and eneded with this poked out smith!

The run up for this handrail is wack. It starts with you riding up a curb on a piece of plywood then rough cement like you see on the stairs. Dane and the boys fixed the run up so its now skateable cause they're strait pimpin like that. Ben Knight was getting his film on like a boss and must have been impressed with Chey's line by the look of his facial expression.

Yesterday had an up Island trip with the boys and I haven't had a great skate trip like that in a little while! We were able to hit a bunch of different spots, cop some clips and have some good times. It's safe to say that Chey's back in skate mode and has been pumpin out footy and photos the last week. But I'm going to get some food and go skate!

I haven't been stung by a bee in ages but yesterday one of those little bastards got me. I guess he had every right to sting me as I was about to squish him with my arm when I was laying down to shoot the nosegrind photo you see below but still fuck that, my arm is all swollen and itchy as shit today. Anyways ended up having a great weekend of skating! Went out with Fabian and Matt G on Saturday to shoot some seq's then headed back to the park to skate and shoot with the lil homies.
Yesterday was spent mobbing around Uvic with the boys. Lil Dylan was trying to get a seq for a bit before settling with this back nosegrind instead of studying for his finals. But looks like he doesn't need to since his Gr. 11 English teacher doesn't want to teach him again next year and is just going to pass him because of that fact. I don't think that's the point of school but whatevs hype for Mr. Toby!

Well the weekend has finally arrived again which gets me hyped! It came pretty quick this week, which probably has to do with the two days of sickness I had during the middle. I don't usually get sick and I can't say I enjoy it too much and who does, at least I was able to get a couple days of sleep! Can't wait to get out and skate tonight and the next couple days, its shaping up to be a beautiful weekend so all you guys get out there and enjoy it! Sunday Mornings

Sunday mornings are usually the laziest mornings of the week and that's just fine with me. Had a great day at the Vic West Comp yesterday, was able to watch some crazy skating go down and work on my beautiful farmers tan a lil more. This shit gets worse every year but whatever but I think I'm finally ok with it haha. A huge congrats to Conlan as he walked away with first place in the advanced category and to Dylon for snagging 100 bucks in the best trick contest! The blogs been lacking video content like whoa lately so I've decided to dip into the vault and pull out some old videos from over the years!

This montage is my all time favorite! It has so many Vancouver memories as well as some New York footy and basically just some good times. It was made for FnF's WATC interview awhile back and it deserves another post!

Well I think its safe to say that Summer has finally arrived on the West Coast, and rightfully so because were a week into June. I don't really know how were a week into June already but none the less that's where we stand! Anyways I'm getting pretty excited because this weekend is the V Dub Annual Skate Comp and its going to be epic, providing that we get good weather and some assholes don't wax all the the ground where you land on all the obstacles in the park. It's hard to believe that a year ago today I was jumpin on a plane heading to New York, like god damnnnn time whips by when your having fun. I thought I might as well whip some photos out of the vault. I've been hearing as you get older time only goes faster so all you that want to grow up I suggest slowing down to smell the roses every once and awhile cause next thing you know your gonna be 75 and on your death bed sayin "What the fuck I swear I was just in my 20's!"

That's the trippy thing about life is you never notice yourself getting older because all we ever know is what we are doing right at this present moment. With that in mind it makes it a lot easier to make yourself a game plan for the future and then start working towards it every day!

I've been wondering where this beautiful May weather that we know and love is at? With May Long Weekend creeping up we're still being hit with mad wind, rain and cold evenings which makes me wonder what the hells is up with the weather. I guess it is getting warmer during the days now so there is one positive thing out of all that other crap!
Had a great weekend with the boys from Port cruising around Vic skating and talking the shit! Friday proved to be a bust along with a few busted boards but it was followed up with a fun night of chillen and drinking a few. Saturday was productive as we were able to get some footy and some seq.'s at a spot I hadn't been to yet!

Basically Cole Desorcey started calling me fultz, when I started free styling and beat boxing more publicly the Ka and the Beats came into play, it’s based off of Muzka Beats haha.

I was pretty fresh into skating when I started filming and editing. I think I was 15 or something. I didn’t get my own gear for a while, I just edited and filmed with my old DCK.

Nice so you've been for at it for a while. You just got back into it heavily after a couple years off, why the break in filming?

I wasn’t skating much after DNA caved in. Eventually I sold my camera because I wanted the upgrade to something HD.

It's great man! Honestly I get questioned about it a lot since we're really young, but I still haven’t found a way to explain it.

How does it feel to be back behind the lens after all that time off? It must have been torturing!

Yeah man, I kept all my footage from years before so I was constantly re-editing throwaway footy and shit. I’ve known for a long time that filming is what ill do for the rest of my life, whether it’s skating, weddings or just home videos. It’s also amazing to have the gear I’ve always dreamed of.

Fuck yea bro, that’s great that you’re still able to keep doing what you love. Once you loose that shit life’s over! What you have planned for your filming future?

I think I’ll just be freelancing for the next while. Weddings are a blast to shoot. At least I think so, plus your getting cash for something you love. I’ve been doing music videos and concerts for the past few months too and that’s been awesome as well.

Good shit, ever thought of getting out of Nanaimo?

Tons dude. I’ve been thinking about Europe a lot, it would be amazing to move there. Nanaimo isn’t as burnt out as people think though. I started skating again and found what kind of positivity can come with it because of the scene.

That’s great to hear. Who do you usually roll with when filming?

Now adays I’m trying to kick it with the kids as much as my older friends. I want to show them a positive attitude towards skating and hopefully they can look up to that.

A Time to Chill

Ever heard how you can get too much of a good thing, well it's true, you can play things out to the point of disgust even when you like them a lot. For example you find a song you really like listen to it too much and next thing you know you don't want to listen to it anymore or since McDonald's tastes good you eat a ton of it but the end result is you turn into a fat piece of shit.
What you'll learn, if you haven't already, is that life is all about healthy balances. Knowing when you've had too much before the things you love become played out. So as much as it hurts me to take a weekend off from shooting I realized I needed a weekend off and left all my gear in Vic and headed off to see my family on the bus yesterday for a weekend of relaxation.
I don't know if I'm really taking a weekend off seeing that I'm on here posting shit but hey I'm still learning this balance thang! Anyways I'm off to go cruise the town and do some reminiscing so enjoy this still and a seq. from Drew at a haunted Castle, Casper where you at!!

The Danger Zone

Remember the beginning of Mike Carrol's part in Fully Flared when he shoots his board and it nails that one photog in the dome? Well, anytime I watch it I notice everyone around me starts laughing. Myself on the other hand always feel bummed out and bad for the dude. Like fuck, first off he's hurt and bleeding all over the place and two he clearly wasn't expecting it. Also it could be that I know the feeling of shooting fisheye in the danger zone.

When your in the zone shooting there's always a voice in the back of your head saying, "Your in a prime spot for a board to take out your front teeth. You want to look like a hillbilly... idiot" But fuck that if you want a sick shot your gonna take the chance with your expensive equipment and your mug. And shit my homies are always risking their bodies all the time so I might as well get in on the action every once and awhile too!

Shooting this photo with Matt G I was able to experience my first board to dome and almost being decapitated by a spinning board a couple times. But my head was fine after rubbing it for a couple minutes and when Matt landed this switch smith up the gate so perfectly it took away any pain I had!

I've been so hyped to be around such motivated homies over the last couple months and it's been the winter. Now that springs kicking in with warm weather and longer hours of light shits about to get heated!

This weekend started out with shooting a banger with Cheyenne but the end result was a broken board and a ankle the size of a grapefruit. Those things tend to happen when your poppin an ollie over a garden gap that's almost a 20 foot drop. Hope that shit gets better soon homie!

We had a small crew yesterday and were able to hit quite a few spots on yesterdays overcast afternoon. While shooting a flick with Matt G, I experienced my first flying board to head. Luckily it didn't do any damage but it was basically my fault for laying in a danger zone. Gotta do what you gotta do! At the end of the day we had a chill sesh at a school with a sick wooden ledge over a gap. Lines went down, some flicks and some flying bum drops. Now its time to go do some more work, FnF Get Some!!

Uvic Learn Shit!

Uvic has some solid spots all over campus, but there has been one that I have always wanted to shoot at. It was this perfect blue and yellow hydraulic lift going off a loading dock. I first saw it in an issue of SBC with Dane gettin a steez front feeble done, and when I first walked by it was even sicker than I thought! Only thing now is that you need a key to make it go up and down, so getting a shot on it seemed unlikely to ever happen.

There happens to be a sick 9 kink rail right beside it and Cheyenne was thinking of skating it so we cruised out there yesterday to put in work. Just as I was setting up a Janitor was taking the garbage out and happened to be using the hydraulic lift. Cheyenne then nicely asked her if she could set it up for us to skate and for some reason she was totally fine with it. She must have clearly not did not care about the University. We were able to sesh the whole time without any hassle which always makes for a good time. Chey got this front smith twice due to a sketchy first one, but damn was the second sick!

Magic Moments

Life is filled with magic moments but most peeps don't take the time to acknowledge any of them. What is a magic moment you may ask, well anytime you think to yourself, "Damn, what I just witnessed was amazing!", that my friends is a magic moment. They happen all day ever day from landing a trick you've been trying for weeks, meeting a girl, helping a random person, etc, you get the point.

But to the point my homie Bryan James out in Port Alberni made up some FnF touqes and his embroidery shop that happens to be called Magic Moments and damn do they look hyphy. They will be a limited edition toque so if you happen to get your hands on one, count yourself lucky! I'll be doing an interview with BJ at the end of the month about the process of getting that shit done, so get hyped for that shit to drop!

I'm so hyped that it is Spring now mainly because this is the best weather to skate in when its nice! Although the weather isn't very Spring timeish yet we were still able to get out and get some clips this weekend. Saturday started a little late due to my roommate Drew and my birthday party the night before, but were still able to get out and snag a flick before the rains hit.

Luke barely beat out the rain as death clouds slowly crept over Victoria on Saturday afternoon. He actually hit the ledge by riding at it on the bottom stair which took quite a bit of precision.

Today started around the same time and we decided to just hit up Uvic and see what we could accomplish. It was decided to warm up at the kicker but it turned out to be the only spot we would hit, but damn did Cheyenne pull out a banger today! Considering that he had only landed this Sw big heel once before he made it look like he'd be doing them for years, like check out that 6th frame DAMN!

Now I love watching Dylan Timmins skate. He always is doing something really obscure, hucking and loving every minute he rides his board. Now I have no clue what this trick is so I'm going to dub it the Stylon Flip. It looks like its going to be a kickflip, then possibly a hardflip, but then it tricks everyone and does a front shuv. Talk about a doozie! Again today we were foiled by the rain so it had everyone heading home early but I don't think anyone minded, it was time for some well deserved rest!

April Fools!

I always hated how April Fools day was right after my date of birth. When I was younger my parents would always do some sort of shit to me because I was off guard from the birthday festivities the night before. This year I have to go to work and will avoid this stupid tradition we've created to play practical jokes on people. One thing I don't get is why the do the jokes end at noon? It's not called April Fools and a Half Day. Anyways enough of that.

Had a great Bday yesterday I must say! Went out with Cheyenne and Luke Connor to try and get productive (Welcome to Vic by the way Luke!!). Cheyenne and me went to sesh the hospital before meeting up with Luke but we were kicked out as usual. I'm dedicated to gettin this trick now Cheyenne, persistence is key! After that it was cruisin to some other spots but nothing was catching Cheyennes eye. We ended up at the Save On center and got this nicely executed front board fakie through the kink. Kinda cool watching front board fakies through kinks and also looks a little more difficult but Cheyenne had it within 10 trys and makes it look simple!

Where the Sun at?

Unfortunately the sun has decided take a rest for the last couple days and the clouds / rain have taken over. Cheyenne and myself tried to get a flick at the hospital on monday but were foiled by security. Since coffee was flowing through our systems we still felt the need to get a photo so we were off to find a spot near by. Soon as we arrived at another spot the rain kinda took over up until this present point in the week, but oh well I forgot my skateboard in Nanaimo anyways.

Here's a nice little seq. from Dylan Timmins with an obscure wallie over gap. This was over the weekend in Nan and I don't know how he managed to wallie over this gap yet he did it anyways. The man knows his way around a skateboard nahhh mean!

204 Nanaimo Weekend!

Friday has finally graced us with its presence once again but unfortunately the rain decided to tag along with it. But I'm just going to hope for the best and see if Nanaimo will get some sun on Saturday and Sunday cause I would love to get some shooting in! Pretty hyped to get up Island and see the Nanaimo fam and have some good times at the second 204 Premiere Saturday night! Hope to see everyone out there!

This sw back tail wasn't all that easy to get as I was crouched and had my hand right in the danger zone. It looks like I'm a safe distance away but my hand and camera are basically right underneath Matt G as he slides so gracefully over this gap ledge. After his board flew out and smashed my hand I was a little skeptical if I wanted to keep shooting it but after me fucking up a few times and some team work the shot came out a lil something like this, FnF GET SOME!!

So where are you originally from bro?

Vancouver, British Columbia.

Good place to be from! How long did you live there for?

I lived in Vancouver for 23 years. Give or take a year of living on the island in Courtenay and Port Hardy for work.

Pretty long haul in the big city, what made you decide to move over to the Island, was it for work or something else?

Moving to Victoria was strictly for a change of scenery. I had never been here at all before I moved to Vic, but I have always loved the island and have tried to visit it as much as possible before deciding to move here.

Since your a Vancouver OG you’ve grown skating there up and worked in the industry. What would you say the biggest differences are between the skate scene there and here?

I would say it’s a lot tighter knit as a community here for sure. The Island is just a completely different vibe. You can go to any skate park here and meet rad people. Vancouver you’re not necessarily going to get the same welcome wagon.

Yea I agree, defiantly more of a family vibe here on the Island compared to the city. How did you first get into filming?

I have always been a big collector of skate videos and had tons of random mini dv cameras that I fucked around with and broke over the years. I started filming seriously because I was working at a shop at the time and I wanted to try and help promote it as well as the riders.

That’s sick, every shop needs someone with that kind of outlook. So you’re a skateboarding, filmer / cinematographer, Husband and Father how do you balancing all of those things?

It can get heated at times for sure. I just try to make sure all my bases at home are covered before I go film or just skate. I’m lucky to have an awesome wife too, she lets me get away with a lot of shit.

Lucky man, chicks usually get a bit bummed when we go skating all the time. Have you been able to take your lil’ guy out skating yet?

We go roll around on flat ground from time to time. He's had a board since day one, I think right now he’s more into Dinosaurs and Construction equipment. He Loves to watch a good skate video though, and has a great taste in them too. His favorites are Stay Gold, Sorry and 204. 204 probably is one because he’s sees a lot of those skaters in it on a regular basis. Probably pretty crazy for him to see them on a TV screen.

He knows how to use the Iphone already, pretty savvy kid.

Its crazy the shit kids can do, I read a bit about it in psych, but that’s another story. Do you have any productions your working on right now?

I think as a group we’re just going to stack some footage and see where it goes. I’m going to try and donate some footage to Zach Barton for The Street Demon video, but other than just see where the imagination takes us. So I guess not really? My bad, pretty baked.

Again myself as well haha, multi-taskers we are. But last question homie. You live and die by the vx1000, why do you love it so much?

It’s about aesthetics, nothing else compares to it for skateboarding. It does also come down to who is behind the camera in the end. People like Jason Hernandez and Greg Hunt are filming HD right and it’s starting to look a little more appealing. Nothing holds up to a VX1 for lens width though, that’s probably the biggest factor. No point in buying a VX if your not gonna get a century lens. For me I’ll keep filming with my VX for now, who knows if ill ever switch. Its better to just fade away I’d like to think.

Weekend Hustle

Ended up having a great and really busy weekend and I'm now beat. Saturday was the nicest and warmest day so far of the year and was a nice reminder of the weather that is on its way! I guess this stoked everyone up because there was hucking from the start to finish. After getting a bunch of shit done during the day we kept going hard into the night. First we were able to get a 45 min sesh in at this sick gap at the museum.

Drew was getting robbed of this tre over and over. I blame it on the exposed aggregate and being slick but when it counted the most and security was swarming he stomped it cleaner than ever. We cruised around to a couple more spots till about 1 in the morning and it was time to call it quits. Today everyone was pretty sore from throwing themselves down spots so we ended up just checkin out a bunch of spots. You can't win them all but thats the way it goes! But its time for bed cause I'm tired as shit, night!

The Un-Landed

The un-landed trick, something that erks every skateboarder's insides and sometimes thinking about it leads to near insanity. We've all been in this situation, thinking of a trick at a spot for weeks and when the time finally comes to turn imagination into reality we try until our legs give out and can barley walk. For some reason we can't just roll away, we don't want to give up but finally after battering our bodies for the last hour we say "fuck it" then walk off.

Here is an example of this of this sesh at the Sushi Gap in Vancouver, you might remember seeing a kickflip over it from a SBC a couple issues back. This gap is the opposite small and had a fierce battle with my homie Caleb. He landed on this front 180 about 6-7 times but slipped out or was tossed towards the puddle on each one. Caleb put up a fight till his heals could take no more and we left defeated. Since there was so much effort put in to this trick the photo can't go to waste so here it is for your viewing pleasure. Now get yo skate on!

Slipping out sucks in general. You’re about to roll away from your trick, cruisin’, when suddenly your judgment fails you and your balance is stuck in that place between existing and action, you're in the place between thinking of the way you need to move your body to roll away and actually doing it. After that you usually find yourself on your ass, sometimes with a goose eggly hipper or a nice burning sensation from road rash. It sucks, but in Canada, when it’s 20 degrees below in the dead of winter and you slip out it sucks that much more. This brings me to the topic of this post, the science of landing every trick.

Now, some of you might think, landing every trick what the hell is that, how would you progress? Who lands every trick? Let me tell you, it can be done, at least to a degree.

With the way our mind works, ye of little faith, seeing is believing. This means most of the time you’re going to be skeptical unless you perceive something with your own eyes. This can work adversely for someone with schizophrenia because they’re going to believe that their hallucinations are real. Most of the time they’ll be a 100% sure. So, what if you can trick your brain into thinking it’s already seen and understood every trick being landed in a row. If it could truly believe this, wouldn’t it want to naturally flow all future tricks into a landed formation? This phenomenon is known to me as, Land-Mode. In an old Thrasher King of the Road the author of the Flip section writes about Shane Cross landing every trick first try. Bastien Salabanzi, coincidentally another flip rider, won many contests by stomping every trick. This is to a degree that they spent many years trying and failing at these tricks. But after a certain length of time skateboarding couldn’t one come to a place of constant trick landing, a constant Land-Mode brain setting?

Land-Mode to me, is a good definition of skate nirvana, an animal chin-like state. When you get your animal chi going, the fire grows until you are a flaming Navajo shredding the park, unstoppable, full bore. Even if you don’t land every trick, striving for this state of landing is a good way to get there. Land-Mode is simply a place in your mind folks. Grow your garden.

Chase's Saturday Barge

Had a great weekend up Island, well Saturday was dope, where Sunday wasn't. Saturday I woke up to the sun shining in my face and I knew photos where in the future. After a nice warm up at the park we cruised out to skate some up ledge this school but there was a gap ledge that was screaming for a photo. After a bit of convincing Timmins and Chase got down to business. Timmins got a banger that you might be able to see later, and Chase cleanly stomped a noseslide.

At the end of the sesh it was trying to rain all of a sudden so we went off to hit some more spots before the rains hit. The first spot we checked turned out to be a bit gnarlier than we originally thought so we hopped back in the car to cruise into Harewood. On the way there the skies opened up and the rain started coming down. It looked like it was still nice in North Nanaimo so we pulled a U turn and sped towards the Triple, two set at United Furniture Warehouse.

Chase got tossed on this kf quite a few times. He kept sticking it every try but would fly forward and bounce of his hip a good couple feet every time. It didn't help that the cement is like a cheese grater and was covered in salt. Not a good combo for open flesh. When Chase landed it he made it look way too easy, kind of like he was kickflipin off a curb. Well he deserved to get it that clean for the beating he took. Watch out for Chase this kids on the come up!

I'm stoked for this weekend as I am always hyped for a weekend haha I was supposed to barge hard with my good homie Dane all weekend but unfortunately a glass of tea exploded after the sesh on Wednesday and gave him third degree burns on his lap, talk about bad timing. So that leaves me going back to my original plans of visiting my Moms tonight in PA then off to Nanaimo Saturday morning to skate and shoot photos. Skating At Night_ Is the Best Part

You remember that Es "The Best Part" ad series from a few years back? Well I remember seeing the Skating at Night_ Is the best part one with Rodrigo Tx and thinking to myself fuckkkk that I hate skating at night. See this was at a time when I didn't shoot photos and I just wasn't comfortable skating at night. The thing that bugged me the most was I couldn't see when to catch the board very well as grip tape is black and blends nicely with the dark. I don't know why it messed me up so much, maybe I should eat some carrots or some shit. Anyways last night it finally clicked why it's the best part.

So with the last day of February hitting us tomorrow all of us skaters are thinking of one thing and one thing only..... SPRING WEATHER. With the official day of Spring less than a month away its time to have a re-cap of what went down over the winter months.

Usually winter means minimal skateboarding with our famous Wet Coast weather and with predictions of the coldest winter in years from our friends at the meteorologist offices things weren't looking too good. September was a great month with nice weather and had me traveling out to Toronto to skate and meet Andrew Norton out at SBC Skateboard. It was great to experience some new skate territory and have an adventure!

October was filled with sun, visits to the Island and lots of time off work. Having a bunch of time of work was great because I was able to take advantage of all the good weather. One of the things that stuck out in my memory about October was watching my lil homie JT attempt to ollie this massive 15 with downhill run up. He landed on it first try some how and on his third try he landed on it again but ended up dislocating his shoulder haha.

I started November off to a bad start with my camera breaking in the last couple days of October. I was pretty bummed but it gave me time to skate and brainstorm like a ma fucka, also get my filmer on too. December we actually had some winter weather with some negative temperatures. That wasn't stopping Benson from hitting up Leeside a couple times that week, that cold shit doesn't phase him! Myself on the other hand I was hiding inside. I finally was able to get my camera back right before heading back to the Island for Christmas so I was hyped.

When there is a dry day on the weekend in Victoria it means one thing, barge spots and barge spots hard. The calls started coming in around 11 and it was time to plan the day. Cheyenne met up at my pad with my homie Todd Myers and after a few calls we were off to UVic. After seshin a gap over bench for a bit we realized we weren't going to get anything and headed out to Central's over ten rail. Dane threw this heelflip over way too easily, almost as if he was seshin a park set. Although he did this with ease, if you look hard you can see that Dane almost smashed his ribs on the kink of the rail, but he's just that precise.

After a quick sesh at Central we cruised down the road to finish the day at this sick lil 4 stair over sidewalk. Matt G was able to get a trick, Todd quickly threw down a Varial Heel getting a seq / still and my little homie Dylan has to go back to get a banger!

Luke's Spotlight is finally ready to debut after a bit of a wait, but it was sure worth it. I actually first talked to Luke on Facebook when he asked me some camera questions, I didn't actually see him in person till I was judging the Tofino Comp and saw him compete. Touché, so how did filming and shooting photos spawn out of your skating?

Well like all beginning skateboarders, me and some friends wanted to see how steezy our ollies down 5 sets and fifty’s on curbs were, so we'd borrow our parents' digicams and make little edits, or sometimes just watch everything in slow-mo haha. That’s how filming came about, I became interested in photography a little over a year ago. Basically because I just loved seeing photos and wanted to shoot some myself.

Thats sick, kind of like Brian Caissie and how he filmed before getting into photography! What would you say you like better shooting photos or filming?

Umm... They both have their benefits in their raw form. I’d prefer to shoot a photo, but I really enjoy the editing process that comes along with filming. Putting all the clips together to make a piece of art.

Guess you need to film to edit. I can't stand editing, to much sitting in the same place for too long. How do you manage to just sit there and edit?

I like watching the video as it comes together, and you can always find ways to be creative when editing. So its honestly not that bad.

If you missed the 204 video and you were in greater Victoria last night then you don't know what you missed. Or maybe you do know what you missed and in that case your probably depressed cause you know it was the bomb digidy. Props to Matt G and everyone that made it possible cause it was amazing! I still have a bunch of wasted photos I took of the premiere to upload that I forgot I took, and I must say they turned out rad haha.

Before the premiere Redmond, Benson, Cheyenne and myself were able to get out and enjoy a dry day and get some skating done. As usual Cheyenne was hucking and making shit look to easy, this perfect warm up Back 180 over the rail to bank is a good example of that.

Beware of the Stare

The last couple times I've gone out with Benson and someone is filming him chillen, he's pointed out that he doesn't want his eyes to be filmed directly in fear of loosing his soul. Unfortunately if this is true Benson's soul is long gone with all the photos and filming hes done over the years. But this had me thinking, why do I keep hearing that camera's steal your soul?

If this is the truth then I've fucked over all of my friends and many other people on this beautiful planet so I've decided to get to the bottom of this and bring some of what the internet says about this topic and see if these video/camera haters even have reason to hate what I love.

The Uncyclopeida - The camera is a mechanical device which employs (1) a closed chamber with an aperture at one end through which light enters, usually focused by a lens, and (2) a photosensitive emulsion or electronic chip, which steals a piece of a person's soul. This theory was hypothisized by Running Donkey, a 29-year-old Native American. Because animals such as kittens, plants such as potatoes and inanimate objects such as Dick Cheaney also possess a soul... with the exception of Dick Cheney, cameras can also record the spirits of non-human organisms and items as well.

Yahoo Answers - This only happens with a high res digital from Kodak. There was once a really sick ghetto spot in north vancouver. We were brought there with a friend, i forget whom but although it was right off marine drive, the place remained pretty well hidden and I'm not sure we would've had the chance to skate it before it was Destroyed!

It was sometime around July 2009 and we spent 3 consistent days just chillin in the courts and filming. Jordan Repin was getting creative and logged mad footage. Next week the Edit. This week a teaser.

Weathermen have the only job you can fuck up over half the time and not get fired. It must be nice to have that kind of job security nahhh mean. Fortunately for skaters their inability to do their job is actually benefiting us for once! All I heard coming into this winter was how it was going to be the coldest winter in years but it has been quite the opposite so far. With this sick weather in the last couple weeks everyone has been taking full advantage and stackin footy. Here is just a couple shots from the mountain that's growing on my hard drive!

This was two days after Cheyenne took that death bail you can see below on the site. This 13 rail isn't something people want to sesh after wrecking themselves a couple days before, and it doesn't help when people start crowding to watch. After some motivation from Dane, Cheyenne went for it and got the clip without a scratch.

Peirce Mckay - Frontside Wall Ride [o]MacLeod

Peirce showed me this spot at Uvic yesterday and man is it sick! Like brick bank to wall, like damn. This spot didn't become skateable without some work tho, Peirce and his homies had to de-bolt one section of a string of bike racks that guard the whole stretch of banks. But you see skateboarders are smarter than they look and when there is a prime spot to skate you make it happen.

Well I haven't really told too many people but I just finished up moving to Victoria last weekend, and I'm super hyped! You may be asking why the move back to the Island and I'll break it down. Actually there isn't too much to break down other than I want to go back to school and get some more arsenal to go with my photography when it comes to taking on the good ol Skate Industry. So I'm going to finish up University seeing I dropped out after 2 years of it. This time I'm actually excited to get to school at take a BBA focusing on Marketing and fine tune some skills in selling some shit haha.

I've had an amazing almost 2 years in Van and so I thought I'd share some of my favorite shots, times and reasons I loved Vancouver and why I'll be back in a couple years!

Magnus Hanson kf Front Board and Product toss at Damn Am

The first Summer I was in Vancouver I was blessed with the opportunity of filling the Concrete website with some content. At the time I was covering contests, events and even was able to come up with a few of my own ideas for web articles. It really got me into the scene and helped me get my name out there. Shooting contests had its ups and its downs. I loved how it was a great place to network and get to know people but shooting them is a whole different story. Skaters are just barging everything so you have to be very quick on timing, composition and didn't make shooting all that easy. I didn't mind the challenge of getting sick shots at a park but I hated getting in peoples way all the time. With skaters everywhere your bound to snake a few and they aren't usually hyped haha.

This kind of ties two things together in one. Gilbert had amazing three flips and I loved shooting those ma fuckas. Also one of the best things of Van were the Lonsdale homies! Lonsdale was filled with a bunch of great younger and older skaters. Always having a fun time skating or piling (a word I was introduced to through them haha) All you homies in North Van made any park sesh into a fun one so thank you all for the good times and support!

BC Ferry Sunset

It was something I hated taking all the time at first, but taking the ferry to the Island grew on me. I just wanted to get where I was going and do shit but I eventually realized that the 1hr 45min ferry ride was a great time to just relax and chill cause there isn't much else to do, I don't like chillin for to long mainly cause it gets boring but if I have to mgiht as well enjoy it. I had a pretty good ritual for the ride as well, it went like so; starbucks, o'dweeds, the sit on the deck and watch the sunset. Now that's relaxation at its finest!

Dan Redmond - Tailslide Hardflip Out

This was the first time I shot with Redmond and I was I ever hyped. I had met him a couple times before but didn't get the chance to snag a flick. Dan is one of the nicest down to earth dudes you'll ever meet and made living in Vancouver a blast. Don't bet money with him when playing mario cart cause hel'll fuck you up. You'll be broke in thirty mins, its best to try and take his money at dominoes hahaha.

Trint Thomas - Back Lip

I met Trint skating underground in North Van and was hyped to meet another chillen dude. Turned out that he was hella good at snowboarding and he got me up to a couple of the mountains to shoot! The only 2 times we went shooting we were able to get quite a bit of shit done so a big up to him for getting me up the mountain!

Marten Maxwell - Front Fifty and Front Smith

These shots were taken approximately 12 hours apart from each other during the start of the Olympics. Marten fifty'd the Whitespot rail the night before in the dark but for some reason the next day he was having troubles with it and took a bad slam before getting it again. When it was time for the smith we had to work around mass amounts of people, a try every 5 minutes and a broken board. With a loaned board from myself and some patience we finally got the smith too. Why we wanted to skate downtown Van on a Saturday during the Olympics beats me hahaha.

Andrew Reynolds Fs Flip and the Mob over the Via Duct

My first Go Skateboarding Day had to be one of Top 5 skate experiences for me. It was my first assignment for Concrete's website, we barged all over downtown with the emerica team and I was able to get some Reynolds fs flip photos! It was something crazy that you can't really even put into words to fully describe, but to say Skateboarding is the shit.

Skateboarders Are Tougher Than You

Bail after bail skateboarders prove they are tough as fuck. Some argue that skateboarding requires you to be tougher and have a higher pain tolerance than any other sport. Cheyenne proves this theory in the day edit you see below put together by my homie Cyrus Stafford! Not only did Cheyenne get up and walk away after this bail he insisted we keep skating and try and get some shit. We skated all the way downtown Victoria and he then seshed this pop over barrier to ledge spot like a champ. Chey actually almost landed the Back Nosegrind bigspin out 5th try or something but kept getting robbed after that. Some how he almost landed a couple nollie big heel outs somehow. Looks like your going to have to learn that one soon homie! Anyways thanks for all the effort homie your a machine!

Hey sorry i have really been slacking on the Monday posts. And i am slacking again here. This is the second ever monday montage we filmed. On digi cams we had no gear so we made it work. Funny story about this montage actually. At the end there where i ride up on the car. I got charged for it and it went on my record and what not. Being in court for it was pretty ballin though. Normally my lawyer said this would be not enough evidence to convict someone. But a year and a half before i had told Judge Claver to '' suck a dick No Homo''
so i was kind of hooped when it turned out to be him seeing my case. I still wouldn't take it back. Well maybe the ollie on the car but not telling the judge off. Thats still a good story to bust out once and a while.

Ight so lets getting this cracken bro! So when I met you in September of this this I found out you are originally from England, how did you end up moving to Oshawa, Canada?
My parents got sick of the government in England, and they'd been thinking about it for a long time, so it just sorta happened eventually really. We ended up in Oshawa because my Mom used to live here a while ago so the area was familiar. It was either Oshawa or some random hick town further north.

Yea living in a hick town wouldn’t be too good for filming hey?
Noosir. Don't even know what I'd be doing! (Laughs)

No doubt, they don’t have a lot to offer up North. So how did you get into filming?
Basically when I first moved here I was skating and that was it. I met up with the first crew I really skated with, and over the next couple of years they progressed a lot more than I did. So for Christmas one year, I got a shitty little Canon 1 chipper, and started filming. I was still skating too, but I've really started focusing on filming the past 2-3 years.

That’s sick bro, a passion came out of another passion! So I read one of your status’s on good ol’ Facebook and it said something about your parents owning a VX1000 when you were younger and giving it away, could you elaborate on that?
Yeeaaa. The story I was told was, my Uncle gave it to them or something along those lines, and they were just shooting home videos and family stuff. They told me it started getting lines through the footage, which is glitching, so they passed it on to someone else. I was only like 3 or 4. They threw away a VX because it had dirty heads. Was pretty funny when I heard that!

They didn't know the gem they had hey?
No not at all, but whatever it was like 14 years ago or so. It happens.

Nothing you can do, the VX found you later in life almost like it was meant to be! What do you love about filming?
It's the fact you can make your own impression on skateboarding. It's a hard thing to do, but through the camera and some post work you can really show you and your crews perspective on skateboarding. Plus I get to hang with the homies all day too! It's just a mixture of everything.

I feel that! Since you've been filming what’s the craziest experience you've found yourself in?
This one time in the city there was this crazy homeless lady was at this spot we were skating. She was like, "You gotta love art. Any of you guys love art?" So I was like “Yah sure.” Then this woman pulls her pants half down and was like fully naked, and she’s like “Look at this tattoo!” She was some stanky old ass disgusting lady, so we got distance from her. The last thing said as she was leaving was "What you guys never seen some pussy before!?" kinda was a weird start to a day…

(Laughs) No way!

So to you what makes a filmin sesh into a great one?
A great one? Well a nice sunny warm day, everybody's got a good vibe and tricks are just going down ASAP. Ohh and if you have a butter angle to make the clip look that much better.

Mos deff! I agree, good vibes is what sets off a good day. Is there anything that pisses you off when you’re filming?
When random pedestrians are talking to you, cloudy shitty days, or when you're at one spot with a guy trying to get a trick for ages and you're just burning through tapes.

Those are all good reasons to be a lil pissy, especially cause tapes don't pay for themselves. What are you dreams and aspirations with filming?
To travel around the world with it. Getting payed would be pretty hype too! If I could just travel with a team or some shit that would be hype as fuck. I always joke with the crew that one day I'll be Lakai's new filmer one day.

The Rain Came Back

Well after a bunch of beautiful days in a row it had to end sometime, and god damn did the rain ever come back. The last two days it has been just pissing but what can you really expect in January. I have here a photo I was able to take when it was nice out in Port Alberni. I've always wanted to shoot at these flatbars but for some reason I have never had the opportunity till this shot. It's god damn cold in the shade and you can see that there is still frost on the ground.
Also I have here is a Vic West (Victoria's Skatepark) montage made by my homie Cyrus Stafford. All I can really say is that the montage will be G till it dies, which will probably be never cause anything you post on the internet stays on that shit forever... usually.

Quick Flick

This Quick Flick was actually shot on my last birthday. A bunch of us went out to the Langley, Surrey area to shoot with my homie Jordan Repin. The crew that day consisted of Matt Gravel, Eric Timmins, (both were over from the Island to shoot for a couple days), Reed Timmins, Clayton and myself. At the time Repin and me were working on getting him a Recognize for SBC and he said that he had a sick spot that we could hit.

We ended up having to come back to skate this spot twice that day because the first time we went to shoot we basically got the insta-boot. Unfortunately I kind of blew up on the dude that was kicking us out. See if someone is kicking me out of a spot and comes up and is nice I don't have a problem. It's those dicks that come up and start giving you attitude that really pushes my buttons. This guy was one of those dicks. So after I went off on him for a bit we took off and hit a bunch of other spots that day. We were able to get back there that night to get this photo in the end so I kind of felt bad that I reemed into this guy. But ah well that's how it goes. So i had a lose idea of no parts for this video, it was just because some people can film alot and some people cant. So i just wanted even the playing field a little bit. Still the people who film alot shows because they have micro parts almost. im rambling. But the story behind this video is kind of hazzy and it almost didn't happen at all. I wasn't going to make the video yet . But i was claiming about premiering it at the INSTRUMENTAL ramp camp. And kind of got put of the spot by a couple of people and hadn't edited a thing it was a day before ramp camp was supposed to begin and we had already built most of the ramp. So i went home stayed up all night and searched my harddrive for all the footage that iv'e filmed in the past year. Also my friend Brailey Wong made some of the music including the intro song and others throughout the movie. But anyways I was able to scrape it together not proud of the ending but ill get into that in part two and the other tragedy that almost had this footage lost forever if it wasnt for some long time loading tapes. Anyways here is the video i hope you like it.

Last year we were able to get out to the Port Alberni Park and film a Christmas montage with the homies but the weather this year isn't going to let us get out there. The shot of Mickenzie below has been sitting on my computer for the last 4 months or so because it had the possibility to get published, but in the end it didn't get used so its time to throw it up on the blog! Mickenzie knows how to skate handrails, it must be a sixth sense or something because he landed this smith 1st and 2nd try.
He looked at it for about 10 minutes, at this point Clayton and I were getting cramped up from our shooting positions so we told Mickenzie we'd hook him with some dollas if he just attempted it. First try he stomped it like he was seshin a flat bar (bribes do sometimes work!) but there was a shadow right across his face in the photo. Sadly I asked him if he wanted to shoot it again (this time for a dub) and he was game, thanks for hucking a second time bud!! So on the second one he stomped it just as clean as the first! I was so amazed and when I looked down at the photo the shadow was in his hair this time and was much more acceptable! Plus I wasn't going to make him do it a 3rd time haha. We also have the footy in Mickenzies 09/10 promo put together by Mickenzie's California homie/filmer Massimo Legittimo (I think it was Massimo, Callum and Clayton who filmed all the clips) which is also below for your viewing pleasure! Burg Unit.
We premiered the video already at the port alberni skatepark and the instrumental ramp camp but after that i really hadn't got around to making hard copies, mostly because of the cost of producing it. So i thought i would just release it in part over the next few weeks then i'll post a download link after the last week. This was my first really long project so some of the clips might have bin subjectable but none the less i hope its bearable and you can sit through it Here is the trailer to give you a idea of what's to come next week.

So we've been lackin on the posts this week with so I have to apologize for that. Unfortunately we lost Sean and his Wednesday posts due to full time work / full time school, leaving him not much time for posting. He will be hitting us with an article every once and awhile! We were going to have the Bails Montage for you on Friday but Clayton's Mac files don't work so well with Bensons PC so we'll have that finished for Tuesday. So with the loss of Sean we are going to be having a feature called FnF's Security Tales where we bring you some good ol' storys from run ins with security! We should be hittin you with these atleast once a month and they'll soon envolve footage and commentary!

This first tale comes from a sesh at UBC with a crew consisting of Mike Campbell, Terell Safadi, and Derek Longo and filmer Rob Lyons. We were on a mission to hit this brand new ledge on campus that I had tried to go shoot at once before but also got the boot. This time the kick out was a little bit humorous, and here's a photo so we can break it down, ya dig!

A - Rob Lyons is awesome to go film with! He's always in a good mood and quite clearly doesn't give a fuck about security. When security came up he would just talk to them and just keep filming. I don't know how he was able to keep them distracted with conversation and keep filming the sesh.

B - Rob loves to drink while filming. I was like "Yo, your just gonna cruise around campus with beer?" he answered "I drink when I do most things." Good enough answer for me haha. Now these security guards proved to be retarded because they didn't even notice the beer.

C - Now this Security Guard taught me something that day I never knew about my career choice. Camera's steal your soul. Every picture I take of someone keeps a piece of their soul on Earth, now this really had me thinkin, "Man I've fucked over so many people out of going to Heaven." But you can't believe everything your hear so I'm going to put his Theory to the test and see if he gets Heaven or not. Maybe if he was nicer I would have deleted this photo........ not.

D - Now this guy didn't really speak much. He must have been the enforcer as you can see with his crossed arms, this ma fucka meant business. You have to judge the situation with these rent-a-cops cause I know some of them think they are cops an they'll actually fight you. Not cool, so when you get that vibe from a dude its probably best to bounce before getting punched out.

The best part of UBC is that it's huge, so you can play cat and mouse with those bitches. Soon as we left the spot we went to another one and copped some clips! Here's a UBC vid Clayton made awhile ago also showcasing UBC's finest at the end! And some woman said we needed to be more productive with our time as she walked by us, ya know what lady... Fuck You, I'm Skating!

When I say the word inspired, I just think of how fucked it sounds when you pronounce it. Although it's a messed word, like most in our English language, this word is the motive behind anything man-made you see. No matter how original or unique something is, if it was created by a human it was inspired from someone or something. Equally as fucked is how seemingly insignificant moments can inspire people to do big shit! In this little article I'm going to touch on a couple moments, crews, and people that inspired me to live and maybe it will inspire you too.

Most don't know but I started skateboarding in Powell River BC. PR it is a small community on the mainland totally secluded from V.I. and Van. If you want to leave it's a ferry ride to the Island and two ferries to Van. Skating was poppin off in PR for a couple years and lead to the first thing that inspired me. It was a local video called "The MOB Video". It consisted of the best skaters of the town at the time and had every skater in town waiting for its debut. It gained hype fast as news flew and finally it was released. I remember running in the rain to the closest corner store in Townsite to pull out cash to buy it at lunch time. I eagerly watched the video that night and it showed me what skateboarding had to offer. The MOB video showed that there was so much more to explore in skating as they had footage from Vancouver, the Island and other place. This fueled my skating addiction watching Nathan Eyerly killing all the local spots and out of town ones. The MOB Crew inspired me to keep skating with the release of the MOB Video, and the promos for MOB 2, and the Nobodies Video which unfortunately were never finished. I moved to Port Alberni going into Gr. 11 and I don't think it could have been at a better time. When I left PR my crew that I skated with was slowly falling apart and I was finding it increasingly harder to find people to shred with. This was not the case in PA! Luckily most of the skaters were the same age as myself and the fire for skating started all over again. So to all the Forestry Shack Crew you guys were another huge inspiration for me in skateboarding!

Just over the hump in a small Community called Qualicum, something big was going on that showed me more of the media side of skating and that was the Rudy Crew. The Rudy Crew were running the Skate Media on Vancouver Island and had every skater stoked from tip to tip of the Island. You could see the Rudy Crew randomly around the Island with Chris Gaetz on the VX and Mark I fish, he was also editing promos like whoa they were inspiring young skaters like myself all over! They have released three full length skate videos showcasing the finest Island skateboarding and I've heard a rumor they are working on a fourth and hopefully it's true! Next on my list of inspirations is PA's own Jamie Collins. When I started shooting photos, Jamie was always giving me a shout to go shoot. He is the main reason I started shooting photos to get published in magazines and showed me something else in skating that I never saw before, how to keep progressing in skating with out having to huck down huge sets! Jamie has motivated me more over the years than anyone and has helped me maintain a positive attitude when things weren't looking up. I can't thank you enough bro you are legend and that's the truth!

My next biggest inspiration was Brandon Wells and Instrumental Skateboards. Brando gave me a place for my photos to be displayed and showed me the need for hard work and the rewards of it. This still keeps me grinding to this day. I remember someone telling me one day Brando was wondering why Cody Morton and myself weren't at the park for a couple days in a row. Him just acknowledging that I wasn't there had me stoked beyond belief and I was now going to the park whenever I could. It's crazy how the smallest things can inspire you more than the big things in your face.

What Happened To Nanaimo's Sac?

When I moved to Nanaimo in Summer 2008, one of the things I was super hyped about was having a Ghetto Spot aka "The Sac", to skate and shoot at! Now this ghetto spot was perfect. It was a short drive from Pioneer Park but if you didn't know where it was you weren't going to find it.

The Ghetto spot was the most random placed circular patch of concrete. It was hidden up a dirt road just before Lantzville and right beside the Island Highway. Protected from spectators because of a hill making a barrier between the spot and the road it was also surrounded by trees so you could basically do what you wanted anytime of the day.

Jamie Collins - Switch Blunt Stall Switch Flip Out [o]MacLeod

Now this patch of concrete was huge and there were 4 features to The Sac. The main attraction was the bank to barrier. This thing looks amazing but its transition is fucked and has served the best of them. It also boasted a sick mellow pole jam, a nipple to boost off of and a sick metal / plastic bench. All of them were nicely placed you could flow sick lines easily!

Although this spot was so amazing and received coverage in different Skate Mags it some how has deteriorated over the years. From what I hear the pole jam is gone, its covered in glass and garbage, also the bench is un-skateable cause some asshole took the plastic topping. I guess it goes to the old saying you don't know what you have till it's gone.

Lipslides on Ledges

For some reason I prefer shooting lipslides on ledges/hubbas than on handrails/flat bars. I used to love seeing them hucked down huge handrails when I started skating and still do. It was something about the thrill of seeing someone huck down something so dangerous with such skill and ease. But as the tech era began lipslides on ledges began to become more relevant and many things about them caught my eye. So with that here are 5 things I like more about lipslides on ledges.

1 -I hate watching dudes mess themselves up on rails. So usually the lips on ledges have everyone going home with a smaller medical bill and the vision of someone getting broken off in front of me haha.

2 - Another thing about shooting lipslides on ledges that's sick is the number of flip out variations are much greater. When a skater is lipping a ledge they have that extra pop from most of the board being on the ledge itself. This makes many different flips and spins out much easier for guys.

3 - I really enjoy seeing the pop out of a lipslide on a ledge. When skater has to come out of a lip on a ledge he usually has to give it a little pop out. That little pop out to me is one of the things that seals the deal.

4 - For some reason I like the sound of the truck grinding against the side of the ledge than the sound of wood sliding on metal. It sounds a bit more raw.

5 - Personally I like timing the photo while the slide is in progress. When timing a lipslide on a rail I usually take the photo just before the person gets into the actual slide. This is to eliminate the question, "Is that a boardslide or a lipslide? I can't tell." When there is a ledge you can tell its a lipslide by the positioning of the body and that positioning makes a sick photo.

No Threeve today, the snow has been limiting the filming and since it been snowing all day in North Van we were given the day off work. We barely recieved snow last year; so seeing it come down this morning reminded me of the last snow day we had. We lived in Nanaimo then and I happen to have some footage of that day. Yo, this is part 1 of a 3 part post.Today's posting is about small town scene vs city scene. Each are unique, with their advantages and disavantages. Coming from a small town with Victoria being the closest big city it seemed to have an incredibly posh scene, very private with an elite standard. Our little town accepted anybody as long as you weren't a hater( and even if you were but weren't too giant of a kook). This has its ups and downs, the biggest downfall being that skating became a quasi outlet for drinking and smoking weed which, in many cases, overshadows the positive side of the skate scene. However, though the city scene seemed to be much more elitely presented with only skaters and various skate personalities being viewed as part of the skate scene it still has its fair share of the latter which, don't get me wrong, is a very integral part of skateboarding but doesn't do the image so well in the eyes of professionals and congressmen, let alone police.

Yo, this week I'm going to talk a little bit about the history of Instrumental Skateboard company based out of Vancouver Island. Instrumental has backed me from day 1 and has been the most integral part of my skateboarding adventure so far. Since the sixth grade Brandon Wells( part owner and CEO of Instrumental Skateboards) has supported me by putting me on the Jay's and Lace it Up skateshop team in Port Alberni. I owe everything that has ever happened to me skateboarding-wise to him and Jamie Collins, who is the other part owner of Instrumental.

Instrumental started years ago as One Love Skateboards based out of Brando's basement in Port Alberni. Brando was receiving blanks from Meridian dist. in Vancouver through Craig Williams, spray painting graphics, and selling them to all the homies in PA. Eventually, he found out that there was a One Love Skateshop owned by Dan Pageau based out of Vancouver. Because of a respect for the importance of staying legitimate within the Canadian skate scene, the name was soon changed to Instrumental Skateboards. With this change came a change in distributors as Brando and Jamie started doing bigger orders and machine run graphics through Control Distribution in Montreal. Control and Instrumental are still in collaboration and making beautiful boards to this day. The original team was Jamie Collins, Kris Hemmingsen and me, Sean Hanebury. Shortly after Eric Timmins from Nanaimo made a sponsor me video for a DNA Skateshop (R.I.P.) contest entry. Upon receiving third place in the contest he received a spot on the team as well. Around this time the homie and filmer/shredder Benson Wishart started getting boards flowed to him with future prospects of him being added fully to the team.

Then, one eventful New Years Eve when Brando was living in Nanaimo one time Kitsch and DC Canada rider and now Circa and Instrumental rider Brandon Soros was added to the team. This was a wonderful advancement in Istrumental's repertoire as Brandon was and is known Island wide for his amazingly graceful abilities and ninjaesque style. During the same era Brando started hooking up with Concyse owner and Higher Ground co-owner Colby Spence, further spreading the word of Instrumental, and promoting Instrumental boards Island wide.

Instrumental has grown significantly since then, moving their home base from Port Alberni to Nanaimo to their current residence of Victoria. Once in Victoria Brando, along with Colby and Aden Ellis, opened up the Higher Ground shop and started to really get things poppin. After some intense shredding and some legendarily enormous ollies Benson was finally put fully on the team. Also, long time Port local and one time Natural Koncept AM Aaron "Shred Dawg" Sheare was added to the thickness of the skateboard broth. During this evolution much promotion was done for Instrumental making it a staple in the Island scene. But there was only one issue, being based in Victoria there were no Vic locs on the team to make home where the heart is. So, after viewing the extremely technical switch mania of Matt Gravel Brando and Jamie soon realized he would much aid in the completion of the Island chapter of Instrumental Skateboards. After years of hard work the Instrumental video was released last summer soon after Matt G's addition and will be out with hard copies soon enough.

Throughout the years Instrumental has had many collaboraters, photographers, and filmers support our positive message and keep the word alive. Matt Macleod, head photographer here at FnF has been the main photographer for the Instrumental team and has done countless photoshoots ,supporting Instrumental from the beginning, helping get coverage in Concrete and on SBC web along with many other websites. Clayton Groenendyk, Jason Picton, Matt Gravel, and Benson Wishart have also done much filming for and in anticipation for the Instrumental videos and various other Instrumental projects. Rigo Gonzalez and Keighley Kodrick have taken many photos for Instrumental as well as Keighley doing the web design for the site and promoting Instrumental on his online website at http://www.confusionmedia.com/. Also, Colby Spence, Aden Ellis, Jim at Jay's and Lace it Up, Jay Zemanek, all the Port homies for backing it since the start, and tons of others have supported and promoted Instrumental from childhood to maturity.

Henceforth, I am extremely proud to announce the arrival of two new team riders on Instrumental Skateboards, Dan Redmond and Trevor Houlihan! Dan quit Zoo York to be a part of our ever evolving family making it even more beautiful that he chose Instrumental. So, here is an introductory video to help you get to know a little bit more about these two riders. The "Suprise" Factor of Film

Before shooting digital, I was learning on strait film. When it was time to upgrade to a better camera I really wanted to get a Hasselblad but I turned to the darkside and went with digi. My reason for going with the digital body was because when your shooting skating the ability to shoot sequences is a must now a days. Everyone is so tech I find myself shooting more seqs than stills. Although shooting digi is very convenient and is nice on your bank account, I find myself missing film more and more.
What I miss the most about shooting film is the surprise factor. The feeling of walking into the photo lab wondering how your shots turned out. So many questions pour through your mind through the walk to the counter. How was my composition? Was the timing perfect? Was the lighting under or over exposed? Then you walk out of the lab, get into your car and the magic moment happens. You dig into the package, pull out the photos and then slowly analyze every detail of every photo. And you get that feeling every time you get a roll developed. It's quite the rush haha.

A couple days ago I was able to have that feeling all over again. I found a random roll that was undeveloped in my camera bag. Now this roll had to be over 2 years old because it has been at least that long since I've used film. The best part was that anything could have been on it as well. Luckily when I received them back I had two photos I'd forgotten all about!

This shot turned out hype! Benson has a mean ollie and seems to have crazy pop when he needs it too. This spot is in Port Alberni and is a beast of a kicker over rail. Unfortunately this ollie wasn't landed but was landed on. Benson and me have to go back and get that soon! 2 years is too long haha.

I have no clue how Sean front boarded this rail. It is also located in Port Alberni and it waist high. Pretty sure both of these photos were taken on the same day, which makes sense seeing that they are 3 mins away from each other. I've actually seen a photo of this trick floating around the internet that is an obvious un land but this right hurrr is the lander!

Today I'm going to write a bit about slow motion skateboarding. Now, we all have to remember that we're just animals riding a piece of wood with wheels, but still, we are the one of the most powerful creatures on this planet and the only ones able to perfect this strange art. Humans have been known to perform telekenis(stuff like bending spoons with our minds)and ,as Matt mentioned last week, precognition or foresight, and even telepathy. Many don't believe such things are possible but riddle me this, how do all those different birds move at the exact same moment as if they were one, you think they're speakin to each other going "alright, we all have to move right.... now". If birds can do such things, then why not those with much superior brain structures, us humans.

This brings me to a new point of using your mind to access a level of consciousness where, just like in the matrix, things turn to slow motion, time slows down and you have ultimate control of what you're doing. Thousands have reported that through meditation, concentration, and maintaining equilibrium of thought we can lose our identities and simply become the energy body that we are. Quantum physics says that we are 99.9 percent empty space and since Einstein made the theory that we are all only light waves bending it means that we are all simply an energy form with much of energy often occupied by emotions. But remember, we are not our emotions. We are energy and light itself in a dense matter form.

Enlightened masters and many who have practised non identification have been known to have super powers like telekinesis, telepathy, they're able to walk through walls, and one major thing is they're able to slow down time. Have you ever had a near death experience? Did time slow down for a few seconds?It might have felt like time and other things like emotional quandaries that block our true energy source were thrown away so that we could concentrate on staying alive. This is only a state of mind. If you learn mind control you can tap into this realm of timeless living whenever you want, even when you're not having a near death experience.

So, you've tapped into this zone, you understand it on some level, and you can do it. Imagine those skaters whose style seems like it is so in control there must be a level of slow motion thought to make it happen. May I inquire, maybe it actually is? Time flies when you're having fun so look into controlling your mind and see your board control improve with it, because your skateboard is ultimately controlled with your mind. Maybe youll be able to tap into that martial art of slow mo and find yourself poppin like Antwuan Dixon, P-rod, or Brandan Soros to name a few. Tune in, turn on and drop out, man for now this is the cosmic squid. You can do it.

To be original or to not be original that is the question. Acorrding to the dictionary originality is "The aspect of created or invented works by as being new or novel, and thus can be distinguished from reproductions, clones, forgeries, or derivative works." An original peice of work or an idea is one not received from others nor one copied based on the work of others. Originality is something fresh, something new that has people saying "Damn that's a good idea, I wish I thought of that." I've thought the same thing when I've seen great ideas put into action, but there is a problem with this world.... Nobody wants to be original.

The problem with todays society is that we are so reliant on technology to do everything for us we have become one lazy ass generation. "If someone else can do it for me then fuck ye Im'a chill and play xbox." This is the wrong attitude. To be original you can't be satasified with everything you see already. You have to get bored with what's there and want to see something else. Then you have to start actually thinking and then do something about it!

Now being original isn't easy. It takes a lot of thinking to and hard work create something new and dope. First you have to pick something you like enjoy. And this could be absolutely anything from skateboarding, art, business ideas, marketing, new formations in football, the sky is the limit! Whatever your little heart desires. Great examples when it comes to originality and skating are Jamie Collins and Sean Hanebury. They are always in search of something new to skate or a new way of skating something. You can see from some photos and footy below! I love shooting with those two because its always something fresh and something fun. Dan Redmond is a very original person. He spends countless hours just imagining new ways to combine tricks together to make something nobody else has done. WATC blogspot is a product of originality and they have also expressed the concern for originality in todays world too. And thats the way it should be, doing stuff because we want something new not something somebody else has already done. So next time you see something sick and you dig it, just know that you can make something just as original and sick people will like, you just gotta put in some work!

Todays Heavy Weight Fight, Girlfriends Vs. Skateboarding

Girlfriends and Skateboarding as a rule are like when the same sides of magnets repel each other. It's like a force of nature that has them opposing each other without knowing it. Some will say "Your trippin Matt, my girlfriend is amazing, she comes skates with me and my crew blah blah blah." Frankly save the shit, most of the time I'm gonna say "Fuck that your girlfriend is wack and has a negitive effect on you and your skating." Sure there is a possibility of finding that dream girl that lets you be yourself and all that other crap but its not gonna be your first few girlfriends.There are 2.2 billion chicks in the world so that leads me to believe I have to do some searching before I find her. Basically I'm going to go over a typical skaters relationship in todays post and point out where to fall back and say fuck this bitch I'm on to the next one!

Does this sound fimiliar? You start dating a chick shes pretty sick at first. Then you finally get laid and your like oh yea this chick is really awesome I get to stick my D in her V. So then you keep hanging out more and more and skating a little less. Now this is the crutial check point. You can go two ways; start skating regularly again or say "Whatever I like chillen with her I'll skate when I can."

Now if you want your skating and your girlfriend to always clash with each other take the "Whatever Approach." It will either lead to you breaking up with your girlfriend to skate with your friends again or you being your girlfriends bitch for possibly eternity. Never put skating on the side for some chick, if so you need to get your shit strait. Get it right don't get it twisted.

Its pretty easy to find out if your girlfriend is wack or not. Just keep skating as you always do. Signs of a wack chick will quickly start poppin up or she'll be stoked and let you do your thang. A wack chick is going to get jealous that you're spending a bunch of your time skating with your friends and be pissed. When you see this happening, bounce out quick. Girls are masters of pshychology for some reason. They can fuck with your mind pretty easy if you let them. Question their motives and don't be a sucka.

When it comes down to it I can see why chicks are jealous and hate when we skate. They don't understand how we could have devotion and passion to something else other than them. This causes resentment and if a chick doesn't like who you are then she usually isn't for you. Until that perfect chick shows up keep skating, pick a hustle, test drive those chicks, then drop em back off at the lot.

We are hyped to announce FnF's newest family member and Intern Callum Wallace! Callum hails strait out of North Van. and we've become good homies with him over the year and a half seshin at Lonsdale. You Have to Have Balls to Skate

Often I've heard the expression you have to have balls to skateboard. Though there are many female skateboarders who rip harder than most dudes, often, I've found this expression to be true. What I mean is when you're about to try a big trick where you could die besides feeling it in your stomach one area of your body that is particularly affected is your old friend mr. sack. Often in our North American culture we consider this area of our body something we ignore and rarely talk about, but really it is an important part in manning up and getting that trick.

In many Indian and other Eastern cultures, this area is considered one of 7 main energy points in the body. This is sometimes called the sacral chakra because it shares space with the sacrum in our internal organ system. This energy point is related to control, understanding, and a feeling of attachement to the earth. I'm not sure about you, but when I watch skateboarding I want to see someone who's in control of the board, knows what he's doing, and look like he's flowing with the world around him. This seems pretty integral to a well balanced skate life.

Some things you can do to get in touch with this chakra is play music, draw, or do anything creative. Skateboarding is a very creative outlet so this too will help you get in touch with the sacral energy center. This will also help you in getting bitches, becoming that dope creative indie hipster, and growing a beard. So, before you try a trick man up and get in touch with your parts because, if not, you might end up broke off into some strange region of time and space. As always, enjoy and take er easy

Friday night I was heading downtown to shoot with my homie Jordan Theissen. As I was crusing down Lonsdale Ave. I felt my camera body moving around in my bag. I thought to myself, "Shit I better stop and re-wrap my camera so it doesn't bounce around and break my shutter or something." So I stoped got packed everything to my satisfaction and carried on to the spot.
When I got to the spot and opened my bag to start setting up, I noticed my camera some how came out of place and was in the middle of my bag. Seeing there was two shirts in my bag with it I wasn't too worried because of the extra padding so I proceeded to set up all my shit. Last thing to do was put my lens on and get shit done but when I took of my a part of my prism fell out.
Now what confuses me is that did I not make the conscious decision to re package my bag so this exact scenario did not happen? Now this has me thinking, if we have future sight to see possible outcomes and take action to stop them why would they happen anyways? Now this question can feed into so many philisophical debates but it makes me wonder, is there such thing as destiny or fate?
I'm not here discuss this right now. All I'm sayin is I had a precognition that my camera was going to bounce around in my bag and break, I took steps to stop that but it happened anyways haha. But when life throws you lemons you make lemonaide and I'm gonna go skate and enjoy this beautiful October Day HOLLA!

We had originally planned to start doing interviews on the site when it was started but we finally got around to it now! Better late than never is what I say haha. Anyways our first interview is going out to our homies at the We Are The City Blogspot (WATC). BOOM, so lets starty this off! How did WATC first start?

Well, me and the homie Bobby both got cameras. He got the VX and I bought a Nikon still camera. Eventually we needed a more legit place to publish skate shots than facebook so we came up with the blog idea

Mos deff all about the evolutionary steps! Who's all in your crew?

The crew is anyone who is down to skate with us.. the immediate homies would be Larry , Bobby, Chris P, Jared, Rico, Hinton DJKaseOne, Chris and the entire city, WE ARE THE CITY!

Well we had this vision that we put into action and it turned out to be something positive for our local scene.. and just skating in general. But we wanted to find a way for all Cities to shine! Now that we’ve got the site running smoothly with contrasting authors.. the goal is to have a place where people can express their passion.Whether its music, skating,and art. It all goes hand in hand and that’s what WATC is all about.

Creativity and passion that's what it's all about, speaking of creativity I see you guys sesh the Vaporizer hard down in STL, how are the laws against weed down there?

Eh, it’s the Midwest so its not as liberal as coastal states, but inner city cops typically don’t fuck with you. Its usually the counties where you would have a problem.

That's good shit then, it's a lot slacker than most of us Canadians think then. Where would we be with out those greens haha. So what is the skate scene like in St. Louis?

It’s come up over the years for sure. Everyone knows each other and theres a lot of talented skaters. Spots are spread out so you gotta drive a lot.. and downtown can sometimes be a bust. But it’s a pretty cool place to grow up skating. Some STL based rippers: Jabari Penelton, Randy Ploesser, Jason Wussler, Brad Johnson, Matt fink, Steve Berra, and hellas more!

Fuck ye sounds like shits poppin! So in the STL is the craziest shit you've run into skating street?

Skatin street you meet a lot of bums. Sometimes they are actually cool people, but sometimes not. I'd say the craziest bum we ran into was this homeless alcoholic widow from Nigeria with cancer. Clearly she was not from Nigeria and the cancer/widow thing Im unsure about haha, but she was out there! The homie Chris gave her a hug, she was on one!

Haha damn can't ever trust those feinds. What are your future ambitions for the blog?
